“In May 2008 our 4100 s.f. home was totally destroyed by fire from a lightning strike. Thankfully no one was hurt but the house was a total loss.
I am a general contractor who has built homes for over 40 years. Within 3 weeks of the fire I razed the remains of the 10 year old home and had started a new, smaller, more efficient, home with an “open” floor plan to suit the life style of a couple.
At the start of construction, with the goal of getting back into “our” home a.s.a.p., I really did not give the kitchen much thought other than wanting a large kitchen island. My g.f./partner for 13 years loves to cook and is a very good cook, so the kitchen was the most important area to us.
I decided it might be a good idea to contact Susan Latta, as she had done some previous kitchen design work in the past for my clients. She completely revamped our kitchen/dining/island layout from what we originally was going to build, to make a great work triangle and save many steps when cooking. We have a huge open kitchen, but only two walls for cabinets. She solved the problem of lack of cabinet/wall space by designing floor to ceiling cabinets with ample food/pantry storage. There are no “dead” corners of wasted space and all of our lower storage is roll-out drawers, instead of doors. Being 6’3” tall, I don’t want to get on my knees to find something in the lower cabinets.
Susan designed a 10’ island/with additional storage that really sets of the whole area. We have more storage than we ever thought possible.
The last thing, and one we did not consider in the beginning, was the lighting. She used a combination of “can”, under counter, and rope lighting that makes the kitchen the featured room of the home. I highly recommend Susan Latta Design to everyone before they start building or remodeling their home.”
